Honey is known for its antibiotic properties. It is also much more nutritious than refined table sugar, which lacks the vitamins and minerals natural honey contains. Honey soaked gauze used to bandage burns and wounds can also aid in healing. As an old time remedy, honey has been taken for stomach ulcers and heartburn, and Western research indicates that it may stop the growth of H. pylori, the bacteria responsible for most gastric ulcers. The caffeic acid in honey may prevent colon cancer. Word of caution, never give raw honey to any child under 1 years of age, as raw honey could harbor botulism spores.
