Is your hHow many of you deal with a nagging burning pain in your skin, most notably on your scalp that radiates across you face? Is your hair falling out? That condition is called Trichodynia, also called burning scalp syndrome, and it’s characteristics are burning or itching of the scalp, scalp sensitivity, or a feeling of pain when one combs one’s hair.  Trichodynia also has a close association with hair loss.

So you’ve tried everything and nothing works. Well, the secret to this is reducing Substance P naturally. But first, let’s discuss what is Substance P.

Substance P problems do not occur from moderate day to day stress. Extra substance P kicks in when stress is more intense. This could be an acute high level of emotional stress, physical pain, injury, an accident, fibromyalgia, PTSD, or ongoing stress of an energy-depleting emotional nature. Substance P is highly inflammatory by nature, a natural method of helping to deal with acute stress but problematic if stress is ongoing. Individuals with a history of such stress are more likely to experience Substance P issues later in life from the ongoing stress of day to day life, especially if such stress is energy-depleting and tends to be chronic.

Substance P involves symptoms in large nerves and nerve endings, especially at night when you lay down to sleep or while you are sleeping. How many of you deal with these following symptoms:
  • Restless legs
  • Painful feet
  • Upset digestion
  • Vaginal discomfort
  • Chest-related symptoms (including funny pains that move around).

These symptoms are caused because your brain stem tries to discharge the buildup of Substance P down primary nerve structures so that it can cool off and you can go to sleep.

Substance P excess also manifests in skin and muscles. Your skin may itch in a generalized way, as Substance P is released out nerve endings (a problem that can happen during the day or at night). It sometimes feels like something is crawling around under your skin. In some cases individuals with too much Substance P are sensitive to physical touch meaning that touch is uncomfortable or even painful to a greater or lesser degree.

Now let’s get to the point you’ve all been waiting for. How to get rid of excess Substance P.

The following is a protocol to help you succeed in reducing excess levels of Substance P.
  • Exercise – walking or any exercise with a repetitive motion. Swimming, cycling are few examples.
  • Hobbies in which allows you to use repetitive movements of your hands.
  • Stretching  will help discharge Substance P from the nerve endings.

Nutrients to help remove excess Substance P

  • Cayenne Capsules - All hot peppers contain a substance called capsaicin. When applied to tissues, capsaicin causes release of a chemical called Substance P. When hot peppers artificially release Substance P, they trick the nervous system into thinking that an injury has occurred. The result: a sensation of burning pain. When capsaicin is applied regularly to a part of the body, Substance P becomes depleted in that location. This is why individuals who consume a lot of hot peppers gradually build up a tolerance.

  • Quercetin Capsules - Naturally helps to remove excessive Substance P from nerves. Take 1-2 at bed, or use during the day. This bioflavonoid has anti-histamine action and should be taken daily. Use 1-2,000mg twice daily.

  • Carnosine - Carnosine is highly concentrated in the brain where it acts to protect brain cells. It works as part of your brain's antioxidant network as well as directly buffering brain cells from wear and tear. It helps reduce surplus histamine release in mast cells that may irritate your nerves. It also has rejuvenating effects on brain cells.

  • Acetyl-l-Carnitine helps naturally discharge Substance P from the nerves. It is for memory and cognitive function. It promotes better cellular energy and supports the natural production of both serotonin and dopamine.

  • Magnesium - Low magnesium enables excessive Substance P response. In other words, if you are cruising through life with a lack of magnesium – sort of stressed, sort of irritable, and then something traumatic happens (emotional or physical) or you simply have a period of high stress for an extended period of time, then you will be susceptible to these high demands pushing you body into a condition of substance P overload. That can be how one can get fibromyalgia or PTSD in the first place. Side note: did you know low magnesium can cause itching of the skin, the desire to use profanity (mostly Tourette’s) and unhealthy sexual obsession.

  • Omega 3's - This should be in both forms of Flax Oil and Fish Oil. Make sure you buy quality and only use the best brands. Omega 3's are vital for healthy nerves. Many people find that improving their Omega 3 levels greatly improve the discomfort.

  • Inositol – Substance P reduces the body ability to absorb an important nutrients called Inositol. Inositol improves neural function, balancing fat stores in the liver and preventing cholesterol buildup in the arteries.

  • Theanine – this herbal compound derived from Green Tea will help reduce one’s stress and help them to maintain focus during the day. Safe for children and adults.

  • Phosphatidylserine – This brain nutrient is excellent in reducing cortisol levels that keep you in the vicious cycle of chronic stress.

  • Tryptophan – This amino acid will help the body to relax and sleep at night and reduce or eliminate the restless leg feeling that comes along with elevated levels of Substance P. Best taken with 50-100mg of Vitamin B6.

Things to Avoid

  • Caffeine – Many people under stress tend to live on caffeine. This is a nerve irritant and it’s best to be avoided until you reduce your Substance P levels along with reducing your stress.

  • Sugar – Many people also lean on eating too much sugar while under stress. Sugar is also an irritant to the nervous system. Use Stevia or Xylitol as a substitute.

UPDATED: Things to Try for Your Burning Scalp
  • ALON Labs Scalp Calming Formula - The Alón Scalp Calming Formula represents the latest science in fighting the main culprits of scalp aging - chronic inflammation and sun induced genetic damage. Our serum is the culmination of intense research and testing that uses targeted ingredients in a synergistic approach to address the underlying mechanism of scalp itchiness, redness, and to promote hair health.
    http://www.alonlabs.com/collections/products/products/scraping-calming
  • Head & Shoulders Anti-Itch Shampoo or their Cool Relief - I know, many people look for something exotic to help the burning scalp, but out of all the medicated shampoos, this one seems to work the best.
  • Flaxseed Oil - This is a must! Flaxseed Oil helps to put back the needed Omega 3s back into the hair and skin. Works more effectively than Fish Oil for this purpose.
  • Borage Oil - Take 480-640mg of Borage oil at bedtime to improve sleep. It can help with the skin itching. Also use an organic Borage oil soap. The combination will help to improve skin health and has brought big relief to many people with high substance P levels. (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED)
  • Allegra - Yes, it's not natural, but how much discomfort do you want to endure? Histamine is a tricky little thing. Allegra is an anti-histamine and can help reduce the discomfort. But one must get rid of the excess histamine that has built up in the body. Vitamin B3 (Niacin, the one that makes you flush) can help rid the body of excess histamine. It'll be uncomfortable for about an hour, but you'll feel happier mentally and your circulation will improve. Start small with 100mg and take it with food to reduce the flushing sensation. If you turn red, it's working. Don't forget to take the Quercetin daily!
  • Go to the doctor or dermatologist to find out what your hormonal levels are doing. Is your hair overly sensitive to Dihydrotesterone and are the androgens causing the problem. If so, add Saw Palmetto, Pygeum to reduce the effects of DHT on the hair follicles.
There you have it, a decent beginning to reducing your high levels of Substance P and get you back to feeling better.

I have many of these symptoms and have burning scalp & losing a lot of my hair, especially on front & top of head, where most of my burning & sensitivity is almost every day. I also have been diagnosed with FMS & Lyme & have had these for 15 yrs. I will try using more of the herbs & vitamins you have mentioned to see if I can get any relief. At present I am taking lots of magnesium & vitamins, and lots of Omega 3's. Thanks for any more advice you can give! JK

Hello Joan,
Focus using flaxseed oil internally and Quercetin. In severe cases, I have seen using antihistamines such as Allegra or Claritin to help remove the excess histamine quickly to provide relief. The Quercetin is long term solution. Add Vitamin C and try using the NIzoral Shampoo that helps to stop the discomfort. Many use the Nutritional Living HairActiv and Inosiplex to help stop the hair loss. Add Theanine to relieve stress too.

I had it bad these things worked for me but until they started working I put five drops of tea tree oil in 8 ounces of jojoba oil and it worked great at reducing the burning in my skin and scalp. It was messy, a little bit goes a long ways but it also helped my hair grow back.

Lee Stevenson tips on tea three oil and jojoba oil helps a lot THANK YOU SO MUCH MY FRIEND. I I think my problem is stress and anxiety over hair loss related. I’m 18 and had this since maybe 13-14 years old whit a very slow thinning but this last 1 and a half year has been tuff for me mentally. The pain and thinning has become 10 times worse and I feel it everyday now. But I put jojoba and tea three oil on yesterday after my shower and the burning is almost totally gone. I have moved from home and moved schools and trained around 12 times a week in a period of time. The pain always disappears when I train, sleep or party I think it is because I forget to think about it. I have burning on one side only (my right in the corner of my hairline). I have had it on that spot whit some movement sometimes for 4 years more or less and it’s a area of maybe 1,5cm into the scalp (looks like a reciding hairline but only on one side). The last year the pain and has moved like further back on my scalp on a bigger area almost half of my upper scalp, but still only on the right side and where the burning is it has thinned a lot. I only feel the burning pain no itching no dandruff only sometimes if I haven’t showered whit tea tree schampoo and conditioner it become a little reddish, but it helpes for the burning for maybe 1-2 days. I now take super quercetin, flaxseeds and acetyl L- karnitin 500, 2 pills in the morning of all and 2 borage oil pills at nighttime (Also biotin and zink). Do any of you think I should take anything else or in a other order to help better? I have only taken all of them together once.

Hi....I'm experiencing trichodynia with hair loss....it's debilitating... I have a high frequency wand that I comb through my hair in the morning and in the evening to stimulate circulation. So far I haven't noticed any improvement but I just want to make sure it's not making my trichodynia and hair loss worse.. I it provides a little relief from the pain in the scalp but the hair loss hasn't improved. I purchased quasetan fish oil borage oil and cayenne capsules. I'm waiting for them to come in the mail. What do you think about putting an ice pack on your scalp to relieve the pain is that going to make the hair loss worse? My hair loss has gotten so bad that I have to wear a topper so that I can discuss the thinning areas I need help greatly appreciated!

Yes, I did. I suffered for 4 years before I was able to figure it out. It takes time, but immediate relief can be felt with the Quercetin, Acetyl-L-Carnitine and Borage Oil (GLA 240mg) and try the Head & Shoulders Relief Shampoo. If you color your hair the H&S will strip it, but relief is far more important than the color at this time.

Focus on the Quercetin, Cayenne and those nutrients that get rid of histamine and act as anti-histamines. If the problem is very severe, in some cases use Allegra to get relief. Feel free to email me at questions@drwardbond.com

I'm having this exact same issue (intense burning of the scalp, crawling, shooting and bite-like pain, hair loss, burning under skin on body). Would the Cayenne initially increase the burning symptoms, since you say that it initially tricks the body into believing that an injury occurred? If so, for how long? I'm not sure I can take any more burning. My gp prescribed strong anti-histamines for me but the soothing effects are starting to taper off...

The cayenne won't increase the burning. Go get the Head and Shoulders Anti-Itch Formula and order the Alon Labs Scalp Calming Solution. It has done wonders for me! The Quercetin is great as a natural anti-histamine and avoid sugar and stress as much as possible.

Thank God! I ran across this post. I have been having the burning scalp issue for years. Lost a lot of hair. Had multiple scalp biopsies with multiple diagnoses. I have Hashimoto's, which I obviously had for years, that went undetected. I have elevated levels of inflammation and was recently diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Please do like I do, don't settle for a diagnosis that you feel isn't right.

Substance P is an undecapeptide member of the tachykinin neuropeptide family. It is a neuropeptide, acting as a neurotransmitter and as a neuromodulator.

So I started with the Quercetin and Cayenne capsules yesterday and it's helping a lot with my burning skin (a little less on my scalp, but the improvement remains noticeable). I notice however that the pills are hard on my stomach (probably the Cayenne). What can I do to ease digestion?

I have been running around from doctor to doctor and none of them have been able to describe this problem with such accuracy, let alone provide helpful tips. This blog is invaluable (It would be great if you would list dosages for each herb you are listing for this condition though. I want to buy some of the others but I wouldn't know how to use it)

Hello Dodie, It is possible to have the burning head syndrome without the hair loss. Most of the people with this problem do show hair loss. Some the hair loss is slow until it is noticeable. Many have commented to me that following the regime they get relief from the irritation in the scalp. Let me know if you have any further questions.

Dr Bond,Sir I watched your show talking about substance p wow those symptoms also show up as mites on your head the burning sensation on your head comes from the mites from them pulling away from your scalp or going into your hair follicles and the sensation on your face is them crawling on your face the dry eyes come from them going into your eyes they go all over your body the digestive problems come from them going in your stomach and living in your stomach and then they're also in your bladder is there any way you can address this on your show I've been dealing with this or maybe over 3 years I do the antihistamines because mites do not poop and they give you allergies some of them even dig holes and burrow into your skin so you get sensations all over your body your ears in between your toes I find the relief after I've scrub them off my body and head with a hairbrush and my body with a dermasuri mitt it helps for a while but then they come back can you please address this on your show.

I've been suffering from Burning Scalp Syndrome with massive hair loss for five years. What has helped the most, has been taking some trace element magnesium everyday. It reduced the symptoms of burning and the hair fall. I remember trying massive amounts of B5 vitamin and resolving the problem completely in a week, but my stomach would not tolerate it and I had to stop. So everything symptom came back. Also, taking amino acids, strong probiotics, selenium, and everything that supports the thyroid, including helping the liver has helped. Right now I'm on Dr. Ron's Tryroid-Liver, and it helps a little, so does quercetin.
But I cannot put anything at all on my scalp, no shampoo, no cayenne, no nothing. I don't tolerate Nizoral or any herbal alternative. So 10 % of the problem is persisting. And my hair, gone for the most part, is not growing back.
I feel though that I will get better... I wonder if after all those years of scalp inflammation, if there is any chance, after this hell comes to an end, that my hair will grow back...?

Hello Naturelover, Magnesium is must and I suggest the Natural Vitality Natural Calm Magnesium. Keep taking the Vitamin B5 as this is our 'anti-stress' vitamin. Quercetin can be taken in daily doses of 1,000-2,000mg per day to help with the histamine levels. The cayenne should be taken internally. In severe cases taking anti-histamine can help. Also, the Head & Shoulders Anti-Itch Shampoo has brought much relief to many. Some use coconut oil on their scalp to help and it may help spur hair growth. I wish I had a definite answer to the problem as it's affecting so many people. I have it too, but the protocol that I have written works well for me.I don't know which probiotics you are taking, but I only suggest Essential Formulas Dr. Ohhira's Probiotics as it takes 3 years to make and they are live bacteria and it works. Feel free to email directly questions@drwardbond.com

Thanks for your answer Dr Bond, but actually this condition is quite complex and does not have the same etiology for everyone it seems. Yet there are similarities between cases.
I don't tolerate Natural Calm Magnesium, because it is magnesium citrate and it contains stevia. I don't tolerate stevia at all. Also, it is contaminated with lead, mercury and arsenic quite a bit. https://labdoor.com/report/natural-vitality-natural-calm
Also, magnesium citrate causes gut problems in people with digestive issues, so it aggravates the problem. I take magnesium bisglycinate with taurine which is much more bioavailable. But what helped me much more than taking ponderal dose magnesium, was liquid trace magnesium. It reduced most of the symptoms just by itself. It actually enhances the magnesium absorption by the cells.
About the probiotics, even if the theory behind Dr. Ohira is so coherent, I have no results with them. I take multiple strain, high dose probiotics from New Roots which have multiple strains of anti-histaminic friendly-bacteria.
The dose of b vitamin that acts on Burning Scalp syndrome is 500 mg, three times a day. It's too much for my sensitive stomach and gut. I can tolerate only small amounts which don't do much of anything for my symptoms.
I don't tolerate cayenne internally neither. My digestive system is way too sensitive. And the Shampoo you mentioned is part of all the shampoos I was talking about. It just burns my scalp more and my hair fall even more also.
And anti-histaminic drugs don't agree with me at all. They destroy the nervous system anyways and are associated with early onset of memory loss and dementia, and my liver is already overwhelmed by my very serious illness.
The things that have helped me the most have been: trace element magnesium, strong probiotics, humic/fulvic acid complex, ashwagandha herbal extracts, and everything that supports the thyroid and the conversion from T4 to T3 hormone.
I've seen quite a few reports of people having theses symptoms also having thyroid issues like nodules for example.
I suspect that systemic infections, like an opportunistic infection by virus, bacteria or parasite is involved in many cases.
I also have a strong feeling that mitochondrial integrity is involved.

Have you had your iodine levels checked? Nodules are directly related to high levels of bromide (bread products), fluoride (drinking water), and chloride (drinking tap water) as these toxins push the iodine from the thyroid and lead to hypothyroidism and nodules. Only iodine replenishment can help move those toxins from the thyroid gland and restore it back to its natural function.

Trichodynia also has a close association with hair loss.

Naturelover

Of course iodine was checked and many iodine types were taken.
But nodules are not only due to Iodine deficiency. They can be due to selenium deficiency, an estrogen dominance, lack of restorative fats which brings us to an impaired mitochondrial function, therefore insufficient ATP, Epstein-Barr virus, severe liver issues and other infections and toxins.

I have been having BSS for the last one year. All my blood works are normal. Along with the burning, itching, pain and crawling, I also sometimes have a icy hot feeling in my scalp. I have been on 10mg amirtriplytine for the last 11 months on and off. Will the quercetin and cayenne capsules give relief from the burning and pain? I am yet to try them. I don't want to be on the amirtriplytine for a very long time. What is the dosage of the quercetin and cayenne that needs to be taken everyday and for how long? I am not looking for a cure but looking to control my symptoms. Any information would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Shobana, I find the Quercetin and Acetyl-L-Carnitine to be the most effective. Cayenne can be helpful as well as niacin (will make the skin flush for an hour, but I wouldn't use until later). Quercetin at 1000mg once to twice per day. ALC is 500mg once or twice daily. Also, if the scalp is very irritated use the Alon Labs Scalp Calming Formula and I find the Head and Shoulders Anti-Itch Shampoo can be very helpful, leave on the scalp for at least 2-5 minutes before rinsing. If you color your hair it will strip the color, so beware.

Will it be ok if I take the quercetin and ALC along with the amirtriplytine? I am on 10mg now. Every time I try tapering off, my symptoms worsen, with panic attacks and increased stress. Looks like it will be a long way before I come off the amirtriplytine totally. One of the symptoms that worsen is the itching.

Hi Sylwia,

Sorry to hear that you have to go through all this. I am still on the amitriptyline 10mg. Added to that I am also on most of the supplements listed above and a few others too.

I am not sure what has been helping me, but I realised few months on it and the amitriptyline does not help on its own. Maybe because 10mg is a very low dose. I know that on high dosage it works better, but I wish to stay on the low dose. Any day I would prefer supplements to drugs and hope that one day I will be able to come off the drug. For now, it has played a significant role in giving me my life back, which is important to me.

Do check with your doctor what is causing your burning scalp. Other medical conditions like occipital neuralgia, neck curvature etc. could be causing it too.

I would say that the number of days that I feel better have improved than before, with the above supplements and the amitriptyline 10mg. Magnesium is very important because it helps with any pressure on the scalp and is also good for migraines. What I have shared is my personal experience and do keep looking for answers. That is what really has helped me.

One final thought. Don’t stress. I can’t stress enough on this. Stress plays havoc on this condition and is no good.

As mentioned in this article by Dr.Bond, work on your interests and hobbies. It helps to take the mind away from this condition. The less you stress about it, the better.

All the very best.

I am doing fine without it. I only take the supplements listed above. I try to keep healthy diet and do exercises/ yoga.
It wasn't easy at first but with the time sympotms ceased. The burning is almost gone. The scalp is sometimes sore or sensitive when combing but this is very light and I can see that it is getting weaker and weaker.
If you need some help let me know, I will try to help.

Could getting rid of excess Substance P help sebaceous hyperplasia and seborrheic keratosis? Can they ever go away with natural treatments?

That is a very good question, Jessie.
I looked up what could counteract substance P production. And apparently, a higher count of enkephalin would help. What helps us produce more enkephalin would be restorative fats, massages, and... well, there is not so much research I could find in this area.
But I would bet on pure phophatydylcholine to restore cell membrane, and then regulate peptides activity. As Substance P is a neuropeptide, there is some chance it will get better regulation of cells have rejuvenated membranes.

I agree. the Phosphatidylcholine could be very helpful. I would look into using Burdock and Yellowdock root as both work very well in restoring the function of the oil glands in the body. They will help help with improving blood and lymph health.

I have been dealing with this for 8 mths and have lost half of my hair. Very frustrating since every doctor has a different opinion or they say it's not what they specialize in. It all started with a low TSH level last year and nodules on my thyroid. I had no symptoms of hyperthyroidism until this year - hair loss, heart palpitations, dry nails, etc. plus the burning scalp symptoms. I am on various supplements that are mentioned in prior emails. Has any one had the iodine treatment to decrease the over production of the thyroid hormone.

Thank you for posting this! I have been suffering from burning scalp and slow hair loss fora few years now. Everyone kept telling me that my hair looked fine but now it has gotten more noticeable. My left front side of my heard is where it concentrates at. The hair is so brittle it snaps off quickly and i cant wear ponytails anymore because the tug hurts and feels like my hair is going to rip out.

I am vegan and I work out. BUT I am in sales so Im always stressed out and have bad RLS. I dont have dandruff, but my nasal cavity on the left side is ususally clogged and the left side of my face and head feel slightly numb sometimes. oh and sugar makes me sick and i can only drink 1 cup of coffee or i get the jitters.

Any advice or supplements i should take would be much appreciated.

I've been dealing with BSS since 2010. 24/7 there's no end to it. Drs are of no help. I've been put on every type of meds. I have no tolerance for them. Head and shoulders kills my scalp. I've been thru so many shampoos. Can only wash twice a week. My scalp gets so intense it feels like my brains on fire. Hard to explain. I'm on magnesium, vit d3, multivitamin and probiotics. Nothing has helped. I do feel like I release to much histamine. Two or three days a week my scalp, nose and throat and eyes burn. Then just disappears. Strange.... I've given up hoping for a answer. Seems no ones find one either. I've had a small amount of hair loss. No more than normal. I can tolerate no sun on my head in the summer. Or it feels like I'll pass out. I truly hate this. Whatever it is.

Hello Donna, here is the updated article with additional nutrients. http://www.drwardbond.com/dr-bs-blog/burning-scalp-substance-p-pain - Have you tried an aloe vera based shampoo? I suggest using Acetyl-L-Carnitine, Borage oil (GLA content 240-320mg) as well as a natural anti-histamine such as Quercetin. All of it is in the updated article. With this condition, it's all about trial and error as everyone has something slightly different happening to them. Keep the diet as clean as possible as sugar is a big no-no.

Ty for replying. If my diet gets any cleaner I'll be starving. Lol
I'm gluten free sugar free grain free fruit free and most vegetables irritate my stomach. I've tried aloe based shampoo and it hurts. Most the time I wash with just water. Just running my fingers thru my scalp activates the pain. It's mind boggling. I will try the quercetin. The pain just wears me out. Gets old. I'll read the updated post. Ty again for replying.

Hi Dr Bond and thanks ever so much for your web site
Way back in 2003 I was told by a specialist my tummy pains were caused by too much SP He prescribed endep ..I was very curios as to why I had too much SP, but asking GP's just resulted in a puzzled stares.
Finally I find your in depth explanation and it really helps me to understand my physical challenges
In 2006 I started taking Sifrol for restless legs( Actually they had been bothering me for years and finally they became totally unmanageable )
Another challenge for me is chronic mucus build up which prevents me from achieving sound sleep because I can't breath out ...Plus I often have headaches that last for days and no pain killers bring relief
...itchy skin is often another challenge and recently responded with sever itching after being bitten by midgies and was put on cortisone tablets and cream
Would the mucus and the headaches also be associated with SP excess?? Thank you for reading my comment Julie

Hello Julie,
Make sure you are not sleeping under a moving ceiling fan which creates an airflow that is linked to chronic allergies and mucus. Avoid dairy, sugar and refined flour products to reduce mucus as well. I suggest you start using a high quality Borage oil supplement. The dose should be 240-320mg per capsule and take two at bedtime. Also use a Borage oil soap. Over time it will stop the itching entirely. You may find the headaches go away as well. The headaches can be associated with SP. The mucus it's hard to say.

Mostly I also avoid sugar but do indulge in coconut sugar and honey Was also wondering if Almond milk is the cause Another food I enjoy and eat plenty of is activated Almonds walnuts sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds..could it be hard on my digestive system ? I have every symptom you listed (leg pain and tingling, funny feelings in my chest, burning, itchy, pain on scalp, burning on my cheeks, headaches, rash that comes and goes on my cheeks and neck, and severe hair loss. This is the third time it has happened and every time it gets worse. I have had every lab test you can think of all three times it happened. My family doctor and 2 dermatologist say that it is stress and anxiety. I have tried tons of shampoos, creams, and treatments but it doesn't seem to be helping me. Each time the hair grows back but it doesn't last. Also, it seems to happen the same time of the year? Could it be something seasonal? The doctors tell me not to stress because that makes it happen more. Its hard not to stress when your scalp hurts and your hair is constantly falling out in hand fulls. Any ideas on what I could do? Thank you.

Hello Cynthia, What time of year does this happen to you? I suggest starting with the protocol listed in my article. Many are reporting back to me that by using the Acetyl-L-Carnitine, Magnesium and Cayenne capsules they are getting relief. Theanine and Inosital are excellent for stress. Remove the bad fats and refined sugars from your diet. I also suggest you to try Borage Oil capsules with 240-320mg of GLA in them and take 2 capsules twice daily. This has done wonders for the skin, hair and improves sleep patterns.

Dr. Bond,
My symptoms usually start around the end of January to mid February. I noticed that most my skin also gets very dry and itchy around this time. I have been taking a hair, nail, and skin supplement with Biotin, Argan Oil, Niacin, Folic Acid, A,B, C, D, E vitamins. My dermatologist said to keep taking them because they are good for me. I have also been taking a natural stress reliever with Ferrum, Magnesia, and a few other things that are known to be natural stress relievers. I am concerned about how my stomach will handle the Cayenne. I have a very sensitive stomach and I have problems taking some medicines and vitamins.
Thank you for your advice and help.

The winter months can lead to dry skin caused not only the cold, but the heat from homes and offices. It's very drying. Borage oil and Flaxseed oil can be very helpful in preventing dry winter skin. There are cayenne supplements available labelled as Cool Cayenne so one doesn't feel the heat from them. L-Theanine is an excellent stress reliever as it blocks the worry sensor from the brain. Keep me posted.

Hello Nesreen, Stress can be a factorl. If you read the above article it lays out the plan to help people with your condition. This type of condition is becoming all too common and doctors don't have a clue what is causing it. I would suggest adding Flaxseed oil, Borage oil with GLA for essential fatty acids to help the skin. Use L-Theanine to help with the stress. Many are finding relief in as little as a week with the Acetyl-L-Carntine, Cayenne and Magnesium. Again, read the above and if you have further questions, let me know.

Hi Dr. Bond, my friend came across your article after googling symptoms I have been having for almost a year now. I have Hashimotos, last summer I was tested for Candida and had a slight overgrowth, I did the Candida Diet for about 6 weeks and then stopped, at that time I started losing my hair, over the next 10 months my thyroid levels were crazy, up and down and I was off medicine for a while and things went bad so I am back on Armour Thyroid getting that under control, my hair loss though doesn't seem only related to thyroid. I have the burning in my scalp, but not every day, I have had consistent hair loss since June and I have probably lost about half of my hair, it's very stressful and of course stress doesn't help so I'm trying to stay calm, but it's hard. I think that your article makes so much sense, I have recently ordered the Magnesium, Quercetin, Acetyl, Cayenned pepper, do you think this is a sufficient protocol to make my hair stop falling out or is there something on top of this that you think is important in getting this sorted out? Thank you so much for your help :)

Hello Jackie, the nutrients can definitely help. The Hashimoto's is a whole other problem and can be a source for the hair fallout. Candida can play a big roll of the hair falling out and possibly linked to the burning. I would add Barlean's Flaxseed oil to provide the much needed Omegas to the skin and hair. Make sure you are getting enough protein which helps to strengthen the hair follicles.

It will work for the pain and inflammation. It's the first thing many people notice is that the pain is reduced. As for scarring alopecia, not sure. I would add Colostrum and Andrographis (ParActin) to help normalize immune function if autoimmunity is a problem.

Hi Dr Bond.
Firstly, thank you so much for your research into this condition and publishing this article. The relief was overwhelming when I found it explained my symptoms so perfectly, as no one has been able to help.
I have severe hair loss, scalp burning and itching but I also have unexplained nerve pain throughout my body, mostly in the soles of my feet and through my elbow/forearm (as well as severe gut issues). No medical or natural Dr has been able to assist and my life is considerably affected by daily pain (currently only partly assisted by strong prescription painkillers).

Do you think Substance P could be the cause of other unexplained neurological pain? and if so, what is the best way to tackle this?

I have been following your recommended supplements for the last 3 weeks & have the (Alon forumula on order) but have shown minimal/no relief (although I do struggle to give up coffee and chocolate badly) and am wondering if increasing the dosage would be worth while? If so, which would you suggest starting with?
I'm sorry for the long query and thank you in advance if you have time to reply. Imogen (Australia)

Your article gave me the answers I've been looking for for the past three weeks. I've been under fluctuating amounts of stress for the past several years resulting in sleep issues. I have always been healthy and taken good vitamins/supplements to help, but I recently started iodine supplementation which caused major gut issues that I believe caused a high loss of DAO and started the hair shedding. Anxiety over the hair loss increased stress and that is when the burning scalp and hair loss increased. My doctor ran tests but basically abandoned me when they came out normal. I started taking the Quercertin and flax seed oil which seem to have helped with some of the burning, but was wondering how quickly I will see a decrease in the shedding? Is this a protocol that you have to stay on permanently and will my body always react to stress this way now?

Dr. Bond,
I have no clue how today is the first time I am coming across your website. Been googling and searching for as long as I can remember. Let me first start with I have been suffering for over 20 years. Was diagnosed back then as neuralgia. The pain, burn and itch and hair loss has gotten significantly worse over the past 5 years. It is unilateral which is odd to me and every doctor and specialist I have seen. I have spent my entire life savings on searching for help. MD’s, DO’, Accupuncture, Chiropractors, homeopaths, and more. The hair loss is so bad, and the hair on my right side is completely different than what is on the left. Touching it makes hundreds fall. The pain of touch is horrendous. The white hairs that grow are alien, and any new growth falls quick. I fear washing every other day as prescribed to do by a hair dermatologist. It takes a lot of work and a lot out of me. I also suffer majors pain on the right side of my face as well as all the way to the neck.
Yes, I have cervical stenosis but this can’t be causing all of this. I have had countless MRIs which correlate with pain on right. My thermogram showed major signs of heat and inflammation. Again all only on the right.
I have hashimotos hypothyroid, Barrett’s Esophagus, chronic sinusitis, and severe allergies. I am allergic to Cobalt Chloride, Octyl and Dodecyl Gallates which hinders my diet and supplement intake. I am at a loss and need relief. Can you help me? I can’t take B12 due to Cobalt. Not sure about other B’s.
I do take 5000/10,000 D3 alternating days due to not absorbing it. I have had chronic iron deficient anemia which supposedly is ok right now. I take 2000 Ester/C daily not seeing any results. I also take MSM powder.
Please help. Would love to hear back from you.
PS - Can’t use head and shoulders.

I looking to try your recommendations now. I have had a good year - it has been ok, with periods of nothing. but the condition has come back hard this past month or two :-( I am wondering if you know why some of us get it and why it is so hard to get rid off? Hi Dr. Bond. My husband watched your show on Substance P and recorded it for me. I have a few questions, because I'm literally at my wits end. This just may be the answer to my prayers! 11 years ago after having my 6th baby, I had the most excruciating pain go down the right side of my back and leg. They told me it was sciatica. Fast forward, it ended up going in both of my legs. I will try to keep this as short as possible. Since then, I've only worsened. I had a back surgery about 8 years ago, due to a very narrow spinal canal which was supposed to relieve pressure from my sciatic nerves. It did nothing. Since then I've been diagnosed with the following: Arnold Charai Malformation, Allergic Rhinitis, Fibromyalgia, Lower Lumbar Degenerative Disk Disease, Insomnia, Anxiety, (since I was 7 Migraines) Depression, Vitamin D Deficiency, Neuropathy, Arthritis in my hands and lower Back, Chronic Sinus infections, Lyme Disease, Vitamin B12 deficiency, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Irregular periods, Irregular Menses, & Chronic Pain. I am 41 years old and have had the worst quality of life for 11 years now. I know you say that the Substance P is usually the scalp pain. I don't think I have that, only if I've had my hair up too long, my hair does fall out. When I shower or brush it. It comes out I feel abnormally. I do however have a lot of thick long curly hair so I don't know. I suffer so bad from pain I can barely function. I was put on so many medications last year I couldn't even stay awake. I took myself off all but 4. I at least need to be awake for my children. I have no ambition, none. Everything I do I have to literally force myself. I go to pain management to just live. I'm basically forced into caudel injections. And now I get put to sleep for nerve blocks. They do one side a week apart, so I'm getting put to sleep 2 times in 2 weeks. I am not so very comfortable with that. But basically if I don't conform to this, I won't get the pain medication I need to live. As I write this, I'm praying that your my answer to what little hope I have left. I quite often have that skin thing where it hurts to be touched. It feels like I have really really bad sunburn on all of my skin. If this sounds like the supplements you suggest will help me, I will start right now! If you have the time to read this and give me suggestions I would more than greatly appreciate it. I was also unclear if I was supposed to take all of those listed or how much a day. Thanks so much for your time! God Bless you!

I forgot to add, my most severe pain symptoms are my lower back and legs/feet. The best way I know to describe said pain, is that I feel like I never stop running. Or exercising. I also experience these random occurrences where the right side of my face/cheekbone feel paralyzed. It's been only temporary so far Thank God. I must say there is no help for me in the Lyme disease department around here in Upstate New York. I did the high dose of medication I was given. That did nothing. I don't know what to do anymore. I cry all the time. I do suffer from high stress and anxiety. I have had some traumatic experiences. First when my Dad told me he only had 6 months left to live. By the grace of God he had a couple more years almost. But my Dad was my favorite person in this world. Of course different than my children. I've never recovered from losing him and that was nearly 7 years ago now.. I know this is a lot, I'm just trying to think of everything I possibly can in Hope's you may be able to help me, if even a little.. I just want my life back for my children. I want to be a good mother again. I feel like such a worthless person. I don't want to live this way anymore. Oh, way back when I had the first issue I was also diagnosed with Hypothyroidism, since then after many, many different tests, apparently I no longer have it. Now with the "war on opioids" I'm suffering even more. I keep getting my medicine changed from month to month. And only allowed to take certain ones. Now I'm on a extended release pill that's supposed to last for 8 hours, which after 4 and a half. I'm right back to full blown pain. And it's so expensive that my insurance company doesn't like to pay for it, so for the past 5 months I've gone several days without out it, while it's being sorted out. I just cannot go on like this anymore. I also DO NOT WANT to be on all these drugs for the rest of my life! I've always been the person who hates taking medication of any kind until I absolutely had too. And now I can't "live" without them. Thanks again so very much for your time and any advice you can give me..

I just diagnosed with trichodynia. I had Sjogrens Syndrome for many years. I been to many dermolgists and they kept diagnosing me with seborrheic dermatitis. Can you have both? Every shampoo I use burns my scalp ,even baby johnson shampoo. I do know what to do. I have a bad stomach and I do know if I can take anything by mouth. I try different medicated shampoos such as clobetasol propionate, clobetasol propionate foam. ketaconazole shampoo 1 time and a scalp oil called fluocinolone acetonide topical oil 0.01% and vedesco (desonide) Foam 1 time in December 2019. They all burn. What should I do? What shampoo can I use? cerave baby shampoo?

I'm sure you can have both conditions. Have you tried the Head & Shoulders Relief or Itch Relief Shampoo? Works wonders. It will pull the color off the hair if you color your hair. Also, try taking BrightCore Nutrition's SweetWheat as it's very easy on the stomach and to help bring your body into a healthy alkaline state. Then you maybe able to tolerate the nutrients above in the article I wrote.

Thank you so much for all the info. I have been suffering with this condition for the past 3 years and have lost so much hair. I also have sebhorreic dermatitis (which started to go away after a small round of antibiotics) I've noticed I have had more breakouts and extremely oily skin lately making this whole situation worse. The sebhorreic dermatitis, scalp pain, and hair loss all started at the same time and it seems like one thing after another recently. Do you know what helps with the oil skin and androgen issues?

I’ve had this issue since after chemotherapy 13 years ago. Seven years in I finally found something that worked like a miracle. Viviscal shampoo, conditioner and scalp serum was amazing. My hair finally started to grow back like before. Then they changed the formula. I have emailed them and begged them to go back to the original formula to no avail. Maybe if more people request it they will listen. I had tried dozens of shampoos before and since and nothing works.

I have the burning scalp and hair loss. In reading your remedies and doses, does it matter that I am 92lbs and sensitive to medication as to what and how much I take? For instance, you recommend 1000-2000 mg quercetin. Should I start at a smaller dose?

You can start with 1000mg. I do suggest adding both the Borage Oil and Acety-l-Carnitine. Take the Borage at bedtime and the ALC in the morning with the Quercetin.

I wrote down all of the supplements, but many of them do not have the dose and if you have a recommendation list of who to buy the supplements from. I am so happy to have found this blog. I thought the burning scale was hot flashes. However, I now realize that is not the case. Thank you so much for your help

Thank you for such a good information! I have tried some of them before, but not everything is working. Ordered some Acetyl l-carnitine and quercetine now. I have had trichodynia and hair loss for 5 years. Right now my trichodynia is back again and being severe with a lot of hair loss. My hair was super thick before, now it’s quite thin, but because I have tightly curled hair, it still seems thick. My question is, is it possible to use minoxidil to reverse hair loss or can it possibly make it worse?

You can try it. I find the Head and Shoulders Shampoo Relief works very well, but it will strip color if you are coloring your hair. Also, Borage Oil with 240mg of GLA works very well with the Quercetin, Acetyl-l-Carnitine too.

I have been suffering with this intense burning itchy scalp and hair loss for last 1.5 yrs. Im convinced the onset was triggered by coffee/caffeine intake. and I suspect my adrenal glands may be involved somehow. it's still a mystery and I still have it BUT have figured out a way to keep it at bay so long if I do my protocol. what has worked for me is: A daily teaspoon of magnesium calm in water, 2 Quercetine capsules per day in the morning and 3 cups of strongly brewed stinging nettle tea. I buy a pound of it (loose dry leaves, (organic) from a CSA and through it daily. I drink it and I also put it in a spray bottle and spray it on my scalp nightly. these three things combined were instantly successful and I barely feel anything in my scalp now. I have noticed that if I skip one day it does come back so consistency is key. I really really hope this helps someone else! let me know if it works for you!

Add the Borage Oil with 240mg of GLA and take 2 capsules at bedtime. Also, Lecithin can help by adding healthy oil into the skin. If you don't color your hair, the Head & Shoulders Relief Shampoo can work wonders by giving you relief. It is a slow process, but I found the Borage and the shampoo give me quicker relief. Also, your histamine levels can be high, so by taking Niacin 100mg once a day, it will remove the elevated histamine. Be aware that Niacin causes the skin to flush red for about a half hour so take it with food. If you get a tingle or flush feeling that's the Niacin working. It helps to push the elevated histamine out of the body and lowers the Substance P levels.

I have the burning sensation in my scalp but no hair loss. It is only on the top of my head and the sides and sometimes feels tingly or prickly. I have not received a diagnosis as of yet but does this sound like burning scalp syndrome? I am currently taking 20 mg of Amitriptyline which doesn't seem to be helping. Of the different suggestions you listed, what would you recommend starting with? And would it be safe to take with the Amitriptyline?

I would start with Acetyl-L-Carnitine and Quercetin in the morning and the Borage oil with the GLA at bedtime. Also, have a hormonal panel done as well. Any scalp sensation at the top of the scalp or side peaks could be hormone-related.

Thank-you for your suggestions. What do you mean by a hormonal panel? What hormones should that include?

Hi drwardbond,

First of thank you so much for helping it really means a lot! I have this burning sensation on the right side of my scalp at the corner of my hairline. It has become larger this past 6 months as I have been anxious of it a lot. I have lost a lot of hair where it burns only and it’s every day now all day. What treatment do you think I should do and how much of everything? I’m a 18 year old boy who had this for 4 years. Thank you so much, ps I have also sent you a gmail from benjamissonjoel pls read that it’s more detailed.
